127. Slide Guitar: The Devil Down at the Crossroads was Hawaiian

Play

Last week we got to hear a great slide guitar duo, Born Crooked, play at our local State Theatre in Culpeper, VA.  We don’t see too many young people like us playing slide guitar these days. That got us thinking about the slide guitar as a possible WSW podcast … ’cause we knew there had to be some stealing going on.

Wouldn’t you know it? We got our minds blown! Everything we believed about the slide blues guitar was a lie! Looks like the “Devil down at the Crossroads” was just a Hawaiian dude.

In this episode, we talk about Dr John W. Troutman’s upcoming book, Kika Kila: How the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Changed the Sound of Modern Music, and how it is going to debunk the myth of the Diddly Bow and the African origins of blues slide guitar.
